ABOUT

Jonathan Martin trained as a theatre director, at Drama Centre, London and at the École Philippe Gaulier in Paris. He has directed over thirty professional theatre productions at theatres including, The Theatre Royal, Stratford East, Liverpool Playhouse, Sheffield Crucible, Gate Theatre and the Half Moon Theatre. His productions have ranged from classical work to new writing, devised work and theatre in education. He was Associate Director at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, and at the Centro de InvestigicÍon Teatral in Lima, where he directed several plays in Spanish, including Macbeth, Top Girls, Happy Days, and an adaptation of Playland by Athol Fugard. He has also directed over 20 short films and educational DVDs, for his own company and for various drama schools in the UK. His short films have be screened at national and international film festivals.

Jonathan was the Principal of Drama Centre London and Programme Director of Drama and Performance at Central Saint Martins between 2011-2018. ​Other work includes leading the BA Directing and the Theatre in Education courses at Rose Bruford College, course leader for BA Directing at Drama Centre, London.  His research includes directing an Arts and Humanities Research Council funded short film, Hard Hat, investigating themes of dislocation with refugees. He has led funded projects with the British Council in Peru, and received funding from the Arts Council, for theatre and film projects. He is one of the UK’s top specialists in devising and running acting for camera training programmes. He is about to commence doctoral studies on The Close Up at the Film University Konrad Wolf in Bablesberg, Germany, He is Artistic Director of the theatre and film company, Gangway
